Ghosts of Hogwarts
When I think about it, I remember how I was lightly suprised to see Ghosts at Hogwarts. I also remember that as soon as I thought : "great ! Ghosts !", I said too : "of course ... in an old, scottish castle ful of witches and wizards" ...
And today, I can't imagine Hogwarts without the Ghosts. I don't know why. Ghosts are naturally a full part of Hogwarts :) like Dumbledore, Quidditch, moving stairs, spoken paints, etc ...:)
I like the Ghosts because they are also funny. All of them. Peeves, Headless Nick, Bloody Baron, etc ... Wouldn't you like to go and jump on them just to know what it feels ? Wouldn't you also want to go to that little party Nick gave for his death-birthday ? They are all in the castle, living as if it was normal to be a ghost. And logical. I mean, Hogwarts seems like an extra place ( which it is ) but the Ghosts make the castle almost rational. As far as it can be ! ,)
According to HP-Lexicon, there are at least twenty Ghosts at Hogwarts ... When ghost-related decisions must be made, they hold a "ghost's council" ... The Ghosts are pearly white and glow ( except Peeves ) and they communicate with each other by ghostly letters. ( Nearly Headless Nick received one from Sir Patrick of the Headless Hunt ) Only wizards can become Ghosts !
The known Ghosts of Hogwarts are :
- Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, aka : Nearly Headless Nick
( Gryffindor Ghost )
- The Bloody Baron ( Slytherin Ghost )
- The Fat Friar ( Hufflepuff Ghost )
- The Grey Lady ( Ravenclaw Ghost )
- Peeves the poltergeist ( Many of the Ghosts do no consider Peeves to be a Ghost. He causes no end of trouble and delights in chaos )
- Moaning Myrtle ( She haunts a girls' bathroom on the second floor. She does leave the bathroom once in a while. For example, she sometimes turns up in the Prefects' Bathroom. She occasionally gets flushed out of the castle with the contents of a toilet and has floated around in the Lake )
- Professor Binns who is the only Hogwarts teacher who is a Ghost !
One of the best description we have about Ghosts comes from Nearly Headless Nick himself who described in thus : "Wizards can leave an imprint of themselves upon the earth, to walk palely where their living selves once trod ... I was afraid of death. I chose to remain behind. I sometimes wonder whether I oughtn't have ... Well, that is neither here nor there ... In fact, I am neither here nor there..."
